A joint venture to deliver mobile health services has been established by telematics services company Hughes Telematics Inc (HTI) (OTCBB:HUTC) (OTCBB:HUTCW), wireless technology developer Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM) and healthcare communications firm American Medical Alert Corp (Nasdaq:AMAC), the three companies announced on Wednesday.
The joint venture company, Lifecomm LLC, is planned to launch a mobile Personal Emergency Response Service (PERS) in 2011 with a focus on seniors and their caregivers in the United States.
The new entity has been formed with cash and in-kind contributions by the three partners and will operate as a majority-owned subsidiary of HTI. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Lifecomm's mobile PERS solution will consist of a wearable lightweight device with one-touch access to an emergency assistance call centre. A cellular modem inside the device will enable wireless voice and data communications, while an embedded GPS combined with other sensors will allow location-based tracking and monitoring of the person wearing the device. In addition a personalised web portal for the user and/or caregiver will provide access to information about user activity and location.
